Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny-Państwowy Instytut Badawczy (Polish Geological Institute) (PGI) is participating in WP2 Risk assessment, with a focus on threat assessment related to leakage and induced seismicity from CO2 storage sites and unconventional gas. It will contribute to methodology development and test sampling and measurements for long-term monitoring practices. It also has a role in the development and sharing of best practice under WP6 Sharing best practice and knowledge.

The institute is engaged in scientific research and development as part of national and international projects in the fields of earth science, biology, hydrogeology, engineering and environmental studies. It also serves as the Polish Geological Survey and Polish Hydrogeological Survey.

The institute undertakes initiatives focused on informing society about geological science and issues relating to natural resources and their protection. Since 2010, it has been involved in assessing the environmental impact of unconventional hydrocarbons exploration.

The institute is a member of EERA Joint Programmes of Shale Gas, CCS and Geothermal and leads the European Science and Technology Network on Unconventional Hydrocarbon Extraction. It is also involved in the M4ShaleGas Horizon2020 project.
