GFZ is a leading pioneer in the field of geological CO2 storage research and is the national research institution for geosciences in Germany. Its Geological Storage section studies the feasibility and conditions of long-term and safe underground storage of CO2. The section’s main aims are operating and coordinating the Ketzin pilot CO2 storage site, developing and testing new monitoring technologies, and studying fluid/rock interactions and their impacts on reservoir and cap rocks.
The storage team has been involved in several national and EU-funded storage projects, including CO2SINK, CO2REMOVE and SiteChar. It is also part of European CCS networks, such as EERA CCS JP and CO2GeoNet.
Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam is participating in WP3 Baseline monitoring strategies and WP4 Advanced monitoring technologies, which focus on environmental baseline and advanced monitoring strategies, and monitoring and sensor technologies. It is also contributing to dissemination and communication activities as part of WP6 Sharing best practice and knowledge.
